4x4 All Terrain Tire SHOOTOUT

THE VERIFICATION TEAM
Don Alexander
The San Bernardino National Forest Association provided observers
for the All Terrain Tire Comparison Test. The observers served two
purposes: first to assure proper trail usage in the National Forest and
other public lands, and to verify that all tests for all tires were
conducted equally and fairly. You can see their report elsewhere on
this website.
Since 1992, the SBNFA has worked to complement the mission of the
US Forest Service. They develop new resources and partnerships that
create new opportunities, particularly through the efforts of volunteers,
for conservation, education, and recreation that have added value to
the forest’s role as public land.
The Forest Care program is a $4 million outreach effort to increase
fire-resistance around homes and businesses while thinning the
forest to healthy densities. Through Forest Care, property owners are
reimbursed for up to 75% of the cost.
Big Bear Discovery Center connects the forest and people through its
visitor center facilities and activities. Get your permits, passes, maps,
interpretive tours and programs.
Children’s Forest is forest discovery for and by kids. Children’s Forest
Youth Hosts and Youth Naturalists are almost as astonishing as the
forest mysteries they reveal.
Fire Lookouts carry on a 75-year tradition of service to the forest by
restoring and staffing seven lookouts during the summer with
volunteer interpreters and educators.
Fire Education Outreach promotes understanding of fire and its role in
the forest ecology— from forest renewal to a virtual experience of the
ferocity of a real forest fire. The program offers traveling exhibits for
display at public events including the Wildfire Education trailer and an
original 1924 Model T Forest Patrol vehicle. These volunteers also
assist during major wildfire incidents in and around the Forest by
answering fire information phone lines and interpreting at the air
tanker base, among other emergency related tasks.
The Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Programs promotes safety,
stewardship, and responsible off-highway travel on public lands.
Outdoor Adventures is a resource to links for information about hiking
and biking trails and picnic and camping facilities.
Off Highway Vehicle Programs
A forest visit used to mean camping and hiking. Today’s sophisticated
multi-terrain technology has created exciting opportunities for visiting
parts of the forest few people get to see. To help Off-Highway Vehicle
(OHV) enthusiasts recreate safely and protect the public lands they
visit, the National Forest Association’s OHV Programs field more than
300 OHV Patrol Volunteers who contribute ten thousand hours every
year to teaching visitors trail ethics and land and resource
stewardship, maintaining and patrolling trails, as well as special
projects.
The OHV Education Outreach program strives to emphasize land
ethics, safety, interpretive educational information and environmental
stewardship to all public land visitors, with a primary focus on
motorized recreation.
The OHV Programs are a partnership of the National Forest
Association, the Forest Service, OHV user groups and industry. Major
funding for the project comes from the Green Sticker program and
American Honda Motor Company, Motorcycle Division. The overall
goal of the program is a more informed recreationist and more
protected forest.
