The RAD-1 (Rollover Avoidance Device) is a precise Digital Inclinometer that features
user-programmable maximum safe angles and a progressive warning tone (like a backup
warning). The display shows X (Pitch) and Y (Roll) angles and stores max values, but it's
the audio warning that really makes it useful.
The All Terrain Tire Comparison Test was designed to push the envelope on a wide
variety of terrain and road conditions. One of our most important test was the side slope
test. One this test, we achieved a serious angle of 37 degrees. Not only was it great to
have the data in memory for max angle recall, but the audio warning really helped keep
us alert. We also found the RAD-1 useful on climbs and descents. It helped use measure
important data but also offered some surprises. The slopes we were able to climb and
descend were steeper than we realized. And the change in slope angle on climb can be
significant. The RAD-1 was extremely useful for us.
As four wheeling driving instructors, Malcolm and I had another surprise from the RAD-1.
Once you have safely negotiated a given slope angle, your level of confidence goes up
considerably. I found myself listening nad looking at the readout when encountering
angles, especially side slopes. As soon as you realize that the angle you are currently
experiencing is less than the maximum from previous adventures, you relax quickly. A
very nice feature to help conserve adrenaline for future encounters.
We found the RAD-1 not only useful, but it become an indispensable tool for all off
roading situations. It was easy to install and setup was a breeze. We highly recommend
the RAD-1 to anyone venturing off road and especially to newcomers who are inevitably
"nervous" on steep side slopes.
Features:
Each character display shows a range from 0 degrees up to a maximum of 60 degrees for
both X and Y axes’. The RAD-1 features a progressive audio alert indicating the unit is
approaching a maximum angle which has been preset by user, and is factory
preprogrammed to begin audio alert beep sequence when unit is tilted at angle 14
degrees less than user programmed set point. For example, if user sets 35 degrees as
maximum angle then the RAD-1 starts beeping at 21 degrees. Beeping becomes
progressively faster as final set point is approached according to the following sequence:
21 degrees, beeper starts @ 1 second intervals
24 degrees, beeper increases rate to 1/2 second intervals
27 degrees, beeper increases rate to 1/4 sec intervals
30 degrees, beeper becomes steady tone
The 14 degree range is factory set and whatever final degree set point the user chooses
the beep sequence begins 14 degrees prior and then becomes a steady tone 5 degrees
prior to that point.
In addition to the steady audio alert that begins when the angle is within 5 degrees of the
user set point, each display also begins to flash when this same angle point is met for
each axis.
Volume is controlled by hitting the left (X Axis ) button. The display will then show “Vo” and
volume can be changed by pressing the right (Y Axis) button.
Maximum safe angle values can be user-programmed by user through front-panel
mounted push buttons.
Maximum angle measured during operation can be recalled and displayed. This is very
useful in learning your rig, especially how it behaves in compound angle situations.
Excellent tool for both beginners and experts for learning the behavior of your rig and
provide accurate data to support what you already believe.
Display brightness can be adjusted via the front panel buttons.
Power can be turned off by holding the right button for 2 seconds. Power can be turned
on by pressing the right button briefly.
The RAD-1 ships with strong Velcro for dash mounting. An optional window-mount suction
cup accessory can be purchased separately to provide additional mounting options.
The RAD-1 ($179) comes complete with the unit, manual, cigarette-power adapter, and
mounting.
